Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Pen Mill Infant and Nursery Academy we provide a curriculum that motivates and engages pupils. We help children develop independence and creativity while they explore new ideas and concepts and have fun! We are proud of the inclusive nature of our school, and ensure that all pupils are given opportunities that are appropriate and tailored to meet their individual learning needs.

National Requirements

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is provided for all pupils aged two to the end of their Reception year. In Years One and Two, the Key Stage One National Curriculum is covered.

Phonics

Phonics is taught discretely on a daily basis from Nursery to Year 2. At Pen Mill Infants school, we use the synthetic phonics programme: letters and Sounds: Principles to plan the pace and progression of phonological awareness and phonics in the EYFS and Key Stage 1. We use material from Read Write inc. and a range of other materials to supplement and support teaching and learning. Children are encouraged to use their phonic skills across all curriculum subjects.

Implementation

Learning is knowledge and skills based so that our children are equipped with all they need to become independent and inquisitive learners. We provide carefully planned opportunities for children to problem solve and explore their own investigations. We also encourage children to work collaboratively so that they learn the important skills involved in teamwork. The curriculum builds on children’s prior knowledge and planning demonstrates progression. We have designed our curriculum framework to be rooted in six big questions which the whole school follows and explores over the year. The big questions are linked to our children’s interests, our locality and our world to prepare them for their future.

Impact

Formative and summative assessments are used in all areas of the curriculum to assess children’s learning, build on children’s prior knowledge and provide appropriate challenge. We assess regularly to ascertain which children would benefit from interventions to accelerate progress.

Self and Peer Assessment

We use the ‘Towards Successful learning’ approach. The children evaluate how they feel during a task. They talk about which zone they are in during a lesson. This enables the children to know when to ask for support and to think of a way they could challenge themselves further if they are sitting in the safe zone. Children are encouraged to assess their own learning by checking how they have done against success criteria and by looking at their targets.
